The origins can be traced back to 16th-century Germany, where Protestant reformer Martin Luther organised hunts for his congregation.
Linked to the Easter Bunny (or Easter Hare as it was then known) the custom gradually spread further afield – with the future Queen Victoria enjoying egg hunts at Kensington Palace organised by her mother, the German-born Duchess of Kent.
Although artificial eggs began to appear in London in the 1850s it wasn’t until the late 19th and early 20th centuries that they increased in popularity, when family life became more of a priority for the expanding middle classes with more disposable income.
Today, the Easter egg hunt is a fun annual tradition for many. With a garden filled with nooks and crannies as hiding spots, warmer temperatures and a generous supply of eggs, you have everything you need for the perfect Easter activity.
